Research ethics and field responsibility

Principles for scientific independence, environmental care and accountable field decisions.

Scientific independence

Teams report methods and findings without an obligation to favour an institutional or commercial outcome. Interests that may affect a decision are declared within the review process. Reviewers distinguish disagreements over interpretation from failures in the record.

Environmental responsibility

A field program considers whether its method changes the environment it seeks to understand. Planning identifies avoidable disturbance, sampling limits and the information required before an intervention. Scientific interest alone does not justify unrestricted access or collection.

People and field decisions

Participants receive information needed for their role and its risks. Operational command may stop field work when conditions fall outside approved limits. Teams record the reasons for material changes in a campaign, including decisions that reduce the scientific return.

Publication and correction

Public communication separates observation from interpretation. Review does not eliminate uncertainty. Corrections preserve the original source record. Sensitive information is withheld through a stated process, rather than an informal request to obscure an inconvenient result.
