Science plan

Scientific objectives

Study living systems in their environmental context, using methods that distinguish an observation from the explanation placed on it.

Describe behavior and habitat use.

Record what an organism does, the conditions surrounding it and the sequence of events. Repeated observation can distinguish an isolated event from a recurring relationship. Classification begins with the record rather than an assumed Earth analogue.

Compare environments across illumination conditions.

Direct illumination differs across a synchronously rotating world. The mission compares habitats while considering atmospheric conditions, water, nutrients and transport between regions. Darkness alone does not establish temperature or the available biological energy.

Connect imagery, sound and physical measurements.

Visual and acoustic records provide complementary observations. The team uses instrument context to establish what each source can support. A call does not by itself establish its function, the identity of its source or a relationship between individuals.

Plan field work with minimal disturbance.

Remote reconnaissance helps define a question before a field visit. Sampling plans consider contamination, avoidable disturbance and whether the proposed measurement can resolve the uncertainty. Operational limits remain part of the decision.

Observing sequence

Reconnaissance, then focused observation.

Earlier daylight reconnaissance informs the remote observation program. Camera and microphone records help the crew plan surface work. A field result is interpreted alongside the conditions and methods that produced it.

Research framework

Questions remain open to revision.

The reference environment provides an initial physical framework. Local measurements may require a revised interpretation. The mission preserves the earlier record and the reasons for a correction.
